Hi all
My mother has two cockatiels, whom are a breeding pair. She has them in a large aviary, these two birds have now had 13 babies and she hasn't bothered to take any of these babies away, into a different aviary (etc) ...so really, she has 15 cockatiels living in one aviary. Is this a dangerous cocktail?? Will the siblings start mating with each other or can they all happily live together and leave all the mating, up to mum and dad, only???
I look forward to any suggestions you may have. |

I've never bred birds Kat, so I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't think it would be a good idea for them to be breeding within the same blood line.
It seems I hear a lot about that same kind of thing tho.
I'd be worried about the health of the breeding pair after so many babies. Hopefully your mom's making sure to give them plenty of calcium & protein. I'd worry about egg binding too.
Sorry I can't be of more help. I think it might be a good idea for your mom to seperate the male & female. _________________ Cathy |

The only problem I see with this kind of a set up once the babies reach breeding age then you are going to have a bit of a problem....it is best to separate the babies from the parents...also dont put any kind of abrreding box in their cage because this will incourage brreding and set them in to breeding...............and if any of the babies are old enought to breed they will fight with the parent to take over nesting box ...........and If your mom decide to keep all in the same aviary it his best to remove the nest box or boxes. _________________
